Graphite for lithium-ion battery anodes

Graphite performs a central function in a lithium-ion battery: its layered structure hosts lithium ions at the anode during charging. Its performance, stability and industrial scale make it the dominant active anode material in today’s commercial cells, linking graphite demand to electric vehicles and stationary energy storage.

From mine to active anode material

The route begins with characterised ore and a flotation concentrate. Suitable material is micronised and spheroidised to control particle shape and size, then purified, coated and tested under strict impurity and consistency specifications.

Qualification measures capacity, efficiency, cycle life, safety, lot-to-lot consistency and compatibility with a customer’s cell. This is why hosting graphite and producing anode material are distinct technical milestones.

  • Natural flake graphite concentrate
  • Micronisation and spheroidisation
  • Purification and impurity control
  • Coating, electrochemical testing and customer qualification

Demand, concentration and opportunity

Mining, purification and anode-material production remain geographically concentrated. Cell makers, automakers and governments are pursuing diversification, traceability and supply security. New projects can become relevant by demonstrating product quality, scale, cost competitiveness and environmental performance.

Natural and synthetic graphite can coexist or be blended in anodes. Selection depends on performance, cost, emissions, availability and manufacturer specifications. The opportunity therefore requires more than demand growth: it requires a consistent, qualified product.

What Itabela must demonstrate

Itabela is a flake graphite exploration project, not a battery-material producer. Its work programme includes Cg assays, drilling, mineralogical characterisation and metallurgical testing. Future results will determine which product fractions and markets may be technically achievable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do all lithium-ion batteries use graphite?

Graphite is the predominant active anode material in current commercial batteries, although some formulations incorporate other materials.

Can flake concentrate go directly into a battery?

No. It requires further transformation, impurity control and electrochemical qualification.

Does Itabela have battery-grade product today?

No. It is an exploration project and still needs grade, mineralogical, metallurgical and market validation.
