NATURAL GRAPHITE

Natural flake graphite: properties, quality and applications

Natural flake graphite is a crystalline form of carbon hosted in metamorphic rocks. Its layered structure combines electrical and thermal conductivity, high-temperature resistance, lubricity and processability. This combination — rather than carbon grade alone — underpins its economic potential.

What distinguishes flake graphite

Flake graphite occurs as visible plate-like crystals disseminated through rock. Metamorphism recrystallises carbon into fine, medium, large or jumbo flakes. Commercial value is influenced by size distribution, mineralogy, liberation, recovery, purity, impurities and processing cost.

Large flakes can attract premiums in specialised industrial markets, while fine fractions can provide feed for processed products such as purified spherical graphite. Only representative mineralogical and metallurgical testwork can define the most realistic product basket.

  • Flake-size distribution and preservation
  • Metallurgical recovery, purity and impurities
  • Energy, reagents, water, logistics and consistency

Industrial and energy applications

Natural graphite serves refractories, steelmaking, friction materials, lubricants, electrodes, thermal management and other specialised markets. Electrification has added a large-scale demand route: graphite is the dominant active anode material in most commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Mine concentrate is not battery-ready material. Anode applications require micronisation, spheroidisation, purification, coating and electrochemical qualification. A responsible project therefore separates geological potential from technical proof and advances through verifiable stages.

Relevance to the Itabela Project

The Itabela Project lies within a recognised graphite province and has visible flake graphite in mapped outcrops. The next programme aims to measure Cg grades, test target continuity and characterise mineralogy and metallurgical response. No mineral resource or reserve has been declared.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are graphite and natural graphite the same?

Natural graphite is mined crystalline carbon. The broader term graphite also includes synthetic graphite manufactured from carbon feedstocks.

What does flake mean?

It describes plate-like graphite crystals classified by particle size after processing.

Is larger flake always better?

Not on its own. Value also depends on grade, recovery, purity, impurities, costs and market demand.
